Mercedes Citan van comes in three different sizes; compact, long and extra-long, in addition to the ‘five-seater’ Tourer version and Crew van. The combi version is a five-seater with reasonable load space i.e. 60:40 of the split-folding rear seat. Citan takes much of its technology and design from the Renault Kangoo, as both vans are built at Renault’s factory; however, Mercedes suspension features add distinction to Citan. The long running 1.5 dCi diesel engine powers Citan with three outputs of 75, 90 and 110 bhp, in addition to a 114bhp 1.2 litre petrol engine.
The Renault’s 1.5 dCi diesel engine has always proved economical when it comes to fuel consumption and engine efficiency. Therefore, Citan provides reasonable consumption between 60.1 to 65.7 mpg and a CO2 emission between 112 to 126 g/km, being lowest in the same class vehicles. These consumption figures are competitive with Peugeot Partner EGC and Citroen Berlingo Airdream EGS6.
A major plus feature of Mercedes Citan is its service interval which is considerably high compared with most of the rivals i.e. 24,000 miles. Moreover, insurance groups may be aided through th4e standard ESC ranging 5e to 9e.
All Citan versions come with a vehicle immobiliser; however, alarm system is optional upon payment. A load space of 2.4 to 2.5 m3 makes Citan a competitor with Fiat Fiorino, Peugeot Bipper, Citroen Nemo and similar models, while the load area length is 154mm shorter in comparison. However, Citan long has a 1,753mm long load area which is even longer for the extra-long version i.e. 2.137mm. The load floor length is extended with the provision of folding passenger seat option. Moreover, the load area and cab space are separated with a full height steel bulkhead in the panel vans and a folding bulkhead option is available with folding passenger seat to add comfort and safety for the driver.
The gross payload space also increases considerably from Citan compact to long and extra-long versions with 490kg, 735kg and 810kg of respective gross payload capacity. In addition, towing option, roof flap at rear and numerous roof racks provide load options along with typical asymmetric rear doors while load lashing rings and top hinged tailgate are customizable.
Citan provides a reasonable reliability and service with its long-running 1.5 litre diesel engine. Electronic safety features with ESC system helps drive in slippery road condition and compensate for heavy loads. In addition, airbags are also provided separately for driver and passenger with side airbags being optional.
Diesel engine is suitable for long distance travel while 90bhp 109 CDI engine is ideal for shorter distances. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard with both the 112 petrol and 111 CDI diesel engines while five speed manual gearbox comes with 109 CDI; however, the best auto option is 112 petrol with its six speed self-shifter and Mercedes Blue-EFFICIENCY package which is optional with diesel engines.
While most of the interior is similar with Kangoo, Mercedes Citan offers a superior suspension, dashboard and column stalk layout with noise insulation and high-quality material making it a more refined option than Kangoo.
