Whatever your business, Transit Custom is flexible enough to meet your needs.

It’s available in three variants: Van, Double Cab-in-Van and Kombi. There are also two body lengths and two roof heights (not Double Cab-in-Van), and a choice of series and equipment options, which means you can choose a combination that’s precisely right for you.

Ford has redesigned the Transit Custom, introducing a new grille and revamped interior.

The split grille has been replaced by a three-barred front mimicking the bigger Transit van as well as the rest of the Ford passenger car range, and continues from the revisions seen to the Ford Tourneo Custom revealed last week.

Revised headlamps add to the redesign, and now feature daytime LED running lights while top-spec models are available with HID xenon lights.

Overall dimensions remain almost unchanged, with front and rear overhangs said to be within a few millimetres of the current model. Importantly for those with racking or other built-in systems, the rear load space sizing is identical. GVW will range from 2.6 tonnes to 3.4 tonnes with maximum payloads of up to 1,450kg, and there will be panel van, double-cab and kombi versions.

Short- and long-wheelbase models will be available as well as standard and high roof vans, with all variants available from launch.

New colours added to the range will include Orange Glow, Diffused Silver and Metallic Blue.

More than 2,200 new parts have been used on the redesign, but the powertrain remains the same with the 2-litre EcoBlue engine being carried over with power outputs of 103hp, 127hp and 167hp. Six-speed automatic and manual transmissions will be available, while a PHEV plug-in hybrid version will likely arrive in 2019.

A new Econetic version based on the 103hp short-wheelbase Transit Custom will emit just 148g/km of CO2 thanks to low rolling resistance tyres, Ford’s Acceleration Control system, a fixed 62mph speed limiter and automatic stop and start. Combined they will help the most frugal of the new models achieve a claimed 49.6mpg fuel economy – a 6% improvement over the most efficient current vehicle. Sport variants will also be available with signature bonnet stripes in black with orange or silver accents.

Inside, there is a new interior with the instrument panel based on Ford’s current interior design language, seen in the new Ford Fiesta. It is more driver-focused, with control panels and switchgear designed to be more ergonomic. A new floating 8in colour touchscreen is at the centre of the dash, and uses Ford SYNC 3 to allow drivers to control audio, navigation and connected smartphones by voice and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Vans without a touchscreen get the MyFord Dock to enable them to mount and charge their smartphone or navigation system.

Storage compartments include three open-top storage bins on the dash surface as well as a large glovebox. There’s now a fold-out cup-holder beneath the gear lever, in addition to the cup-holders and 2-litre bottle holders at each side of the instrument panel. Door storage has been redesigned with three stowage spaces.

New safety features launched on the Tourneo but available on the Custom include an Intelligent Speed Limiter using the Traffic Sign Recognition system and a new Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert that warns drivers reversing out of a parking space of approaching vehicles.

New models will go on sale 1 December with pricing expected nearer the time. Ford executives tell us to expect a small price increase, albeit one that is covered by improved total cost of ownership of the new van.
